''The Watermelon Eaters'' (after Van Gogh's Potato Eaters) 2023

A contemporary work after Van Gogh's masterpiece ``Potato Eaters'' (see photos)

Van Gogh explained, "I wanted to convey that the people who eat potatoes under the light of the kerosene lamp, used the same hands with which they took the food to the plate and ate, even when they worked the land and gathered the potatoes - so they earned their food honestly." The claustrophobic composition of the work also reflects the feeling of the lack of hope that nested in the subjects of the painting and in Van Gogh.
