Inside the book, two scholarly glosses. In the gloss on leaf 80: "I have heard from the genius Rabbi Natan Adler…"
Rabbi David Deutsch (1756-1831), one of the geniuses of his generation. The grandson of rabbi Mordechai Deutsch author of "Mor Dror". The disciple of the Mahram Barabi of Pressburg and the "Noda Bi'Yehuda" of Prague. The "Noda Bi'Yehuda" liked him very much as is indicated by the dozens of responses to his questions that appear in his book. In one of them he wrote: "were it not for your love, it is not my custom to respond on such matters; yet the extent of your love has caused me to go out of my way my favorite disciple".
In 1780 he married his cousin. Served as Av Beit Din of Yemnitz, Frauenkirchen and Dunajská Streda. Since 1810 until his death, he served as Av Beit Din of "Ir Chadash" (Nowe Miasto).
He orresponded with the most prominent rabbis of the generation - his rabbi the "Noda Bi'Yehuda", the Chatam Sofer and the author of "Yismach Moshe". He was greatly admired by these rabbis. After Rabbi Deutsch's death, notes by the Chatam Sofer were found in which he asks Rabbi Deutsch to pray for him and the members of his family! Rabbi Naftali of Ropczyce said of him that he was "a bright light lighting from one end of the earth to the other"
The friendship between the "Chatam Sofer" and Rabbi Deutsch had started when they were youths, when the Chatam Sofer travelled with his rabbi, Rabbi Natan Adler. When they travelled through Prague, they visited the Beit Midrash of the "Noda Bi'Yehuda", which had hundreds of genius students. Rabbi David Deutsch was a young man (he was one year older than the Chatam Sofer). Rabbi Natan Adler told the Chatam Sofer: "You see, I like that small lad" and pointed at rabbi Deutsch. When the Chatam Sofer heard his rabbi's words, he knew that these were no vain words and immediately his soul clung to him".
Author of the "Ohel David" books, which were printed in his lifetime and were given to Torah learners with no charge.
Since he spent all his money on distributing his books, he was left with very little. It is told that one time he came to Pressburg to visit his friend the "Chatam Sofer" and he was wearing torn clothes. The Chatam Sofer asked him whether he had another dress. Rabbi Deutsch answered that he had but it was even more torn…
Miraculous stories are told of his diligence in the study of the Torah, his holiness and piousness.
(According to "Toldot Anshei Shem" and additional books).
At the head of the title page and additional rabbinical signature.
