Nefesh Ha'Chaim - Vilnius, 1837 - the Copy of Rabbi Meir Soloveitchik, the Head of the Brisk Yeshiva - His Handwritten Signature and Glosses
Second edition of "Nefesh Ha'Chaim", the well-known book of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin (1749-1821), the disciple of the Vilna Gaon and founder of the Volozhin Yeshiva.
This is the first edition of the composition as a complete book. At the beginning, the composition "Nefesh Ha'Chaim" was printed only as booklets, that is every "chapter" of the composition was printed as a separate booklet. Only after the four chapters were published as booklets they were bounded as a book. The book before us is the first edition of "Nefesh Ha'Chaim" as a complete book. In addition, in the edition before us, Rabbi Chaim's son, Rabbi Yitzchak" "softened" what he had said regarding the Hassidim in two places in the fourth chapter.
On the Forsazts leaves, the signature of Rabbi Meir Ha'Levi Soloveitchik, the head of the Brisk Yeshiva. On the leaves of the book, two scholarly glosses in his handwriting, in which he refers to his rabbi, the Vilna Gaon.
Stamps and ownership inscriptions of Rabbi Yehoshua Yosef leib Hamburger of Jerusalem.
Added to the book (unbound) is the title page and leaf of approbations and the two last leaves, which were taken from another copy, yet for some reason were attached to each other since the printing with the above signatures and ownership inscriptions.
Condition: Good-Fair. Complete leaves. Thick paper. Wide margins. Dampness and mold stains. Detached binding.
