Sefer HaTashbetz. Responsa by Rabbi Shimon bar Tzemach, from a manuscript that had been with his descendants for 320 years. Amsterdam, [1738-9]. First edition. Four sections in one volume.

Specifications: Section one: [12], 91 leaves. Section two: [1], 69 leaves. Section three: [1] 68 , [1] leaf. Section four: [1], 101, [1] leaf. 32 cm.

Special Features: There are a number of variant title pages for this book. Refer to: N. Ben Menachem, B'Sod Sefarim, Sinai, volume 16, 1945, p. 324-326. Also refer to: D. and G. Yardeni, Seder Hadpasato shel HaTashbetz, Alei Sefer, 10, p. 119-132, with a detailed description of the order of the printing of the various title pages and variants.

This copy includes the three title pages for the fourth section that is divided into three subdivisions. The whole book includes seven title pages, as follows: Title page for the first section with illustrations of lions, followed by a title page with a wide border and design. Title page for the second section with illustrations of lions. Title page for the third section with the wide border and design. Section four title page for Chut HaMeshulash, the first subdivision, with a picture of lions. Title page for the second subdivision with the wide border and design, and the title page for the third subdivision with the wide border and design. In some copies the leaf at the end of the third section with a list of books authored by the Tashbetz also appears at the end of the second section.

Background: The author, Rabbi Shimon bar Tzemach Duran - the Tashbetz - was a prominent later early authorithy (Rishon). He was born in Spain in 1361. After the decrees of 1391 he moved to Algeria where he passed away in 1444.

Condition: Moderate-fine. Reinforcements to the title page and a number of solitary leaves. Simple binding.
