North auction house -

The Northern Auction House is pleased to present at auction items from the family collection of architect Ivan Alexandrovich Fomin and his son, architect Igor Ivanovich Fomin. The items on offer come directly from the family’s heirs and have never before been offered to the public.

Of particular interest is a portrait of I. A. Fomin painted by O. Braz (Lot 780). The painting has never been exhibited and has remained in the family’s possession throughout its history. What makes this work even more unique is the fact that the reverse side of the canvas features a signed still life by Braz, effectively making the piece a “double-sided” museum-quality work by the same artist. Among the most notable lots are also four plaster acroteria in the form of ancient theatrical masks for the monument to I. V. Tartakov, designed by I. A. Fomin and created by Y. A. Troopiansky (Lots 776–779). These items are of considerable interest both to researchers of architecture and monumental art and to museum collections related to the history of Russian Neoclassicism.

In addition, the auction will feature personal documents, books, family photographs, commemorative gifts, and drawings by members of the Fomin family, as well as materials from students and colleagues of I. A. and I. I. Fomin, all of which are of undoubted historical, cultural, and archival value.

The second part of the auction will feature this month’s selected lots.
