This sale is dedicated to the memory of Adam Shladov (z”l), a pioneer of Israel’s textile industry, who passed away in 2024. For decades, Adam and his wife, Malka (may she live and be well), collected silver boxes during their travels around the world—boxes that were once used to hold stamps and sovereign coins. The couple carefully selected each piece, gradually building a large and impressive collection comprising hundreds of items.


These boxes reached the height of their popularity between 1880 and 1910, a time when postage stamps were an essential part of everyday life for both individuals and businesses. People needed to carry stamps with them for regular correspondence. To protect them, special stamp boxes were created—typically small, ornate, and sometimes jewel-like.


This era coincided with the golden age of English silversmithing. Most of the boxes were crafted from sterling silver and bore various hallmarks. They came in shapes such as envelopes, purses, miniature trunks, and more. Many featured hand engraving, enamel (especially in high-end pieces), delicate filigree work, or repoussé designs. Some were designed for personal use—kept in a pocket or coat—while others were intended for desks as part of writing sets.


Now, Malka has chosen to release the collection to fellow collectors, who will hopefully enjoy these exquisite pieces as much as she and her late husband did throughout the years.
