HMS Manchester D95 Destroyer large naval Union Jack flag together with a Manchester Police ”By-the-Sea” blazer and a framed picture of the battleship that the flag came from. PROVENANCE: HMS MANCHESTER D95 - “The Busy Bee” - Jack HMS Manchester's Jack was presented to a Senior Non Commissioned Officer on his departure from the ship after 2 years service onboard 1996 to 1998. During this time, the Batch 3 guided missile destroyer was heavily tasked with two standout periods defining the SNCO’s tenure onboard. First was its participation in Exercise Purple Star in 1996. It was the largest mobilization of troops and assets by allied forces since WWII, with some 53,000 troops engaged in 5 States, as well at sea. The Exercise simulated an invasion and sadly got off to a tragic start when on the first evening, two American helicopters (a CH46 Sea Knight and an AH1 Cobra) collided, resulting in the deaths of 14 service personnel. The rest of the close to one month exercise passed without further serious incident. However, it did serve as a reminder of how dangerous military life can be, even in peacetime. To underline this point, in 1998 HMS Manchester was the first Royal Navy warship to visit Cork in Ireland, during which the ship came under small arms fire on a number of occasions whilst moored in the centre of town on the river Lee. Certainly, not everyone was pleased to see a powerful British warship in Irish territory but fortunately, some fisticuffs in bars and clubs aside, no one was injured. The second most memorable period was that spent moored off Manchester By The Sea in Massachusetts, the polar opposite, where everybody was pleased to see a huge British destroyer. At over 140 metres and around 6,000 tons all up, the Busy Bee was a daunting sight. During the five day visit, pass boats ran regularly back and forth bringing onboard many of the 5,000 inhabitants, crew gave them tours of the warship and made sure all received a hearty Royal Naval welcome, often involving strong British beer and spirits. A particularly strong bond was formed between HMS Manchester's crew and the emergency services in the town, resulting in challenges such as a sports day, cricket, baseball and of course “soccer”, with HMS Manchester crew besting their hosts in most things. These close bonds led to exchange of uniforms, which is where the Manchester By The Sea Police shirt comes in, along with HMS Manchester's Jack. This Jack flew proudly during the period 1996 to 1998 and was “written off” by the Stores Chief as “worn out”, which it clearly isn’t, but this allowed it to be unofficially presented to the outgoing SNCO.
