Estate Chinese Carved Onyx Dragon Tripod Censer - Estate Chinese carved Onyx stone lidded censer with a dramatic archaistic form and extensive dragon and geometric decoration. The original inventory identifies the material as Chinese onyx, displaying dark black, brown, olive, and lighter mineral variations throughout the carved surface. The rounded vessel is raised on three short feet and flanked by large sculptural dragon-form handles with openwork sections. A recessed decorative panel on the body contains finely carved mythical animal imagery surrounded by geometric borders and textured backgrounds. The substantial removable domed lid is especially elaborate, featuring pierced openwork scroll decoration, incised geometric bands, and a prominent ribbed bud-form finial. Additional carved motifs continue around the lid and body, giving the piece strong visual interest from all sides. The combination of tripod form, dragon handles, openwork cover, and archaistic ornament gives this vessel the appearance of a traditional Chinese ritual censer.
