Antique Chinese Black Onyx Foo Dog Guardian Carvin - Substantial Chinese carved black onyx or hardstone figure depicting a traditional Foo Dog guardian beast. The sculpture is boldly modeled with an open mouth, pronounced teeth, raised ears and crest, muscular legs, and large decorative wing-like elements sweeping along the shoulders and back. Incised detailing defines the facial features, mane, feathers, scales, legs, and paws, with warm brown and golden coloration visible within the carved recesses against the predominantly black onyx. The figure has a strong architectural presence and is carved fully in the round, allowing the detailed decoration to be appreciated from all sides.
