G.Filipe Painting
- An oil on board painting by renowned Portuguese artist Guilherme Filipe, 1959, on a thick wood frame topped with gold gild, signed to the corner.
In this piece the artist depicts a male nude figure holding two pieces of fabric as it's central subject, painted with perfect anthropomorphic proportions topped with a soft contrast of light and shadows that enhance the subjects physiognomy and giving it more volume.
To separate the subject from the background he haded a second plane of elements, two Corinthian columns topped with an architrave that frame the subject and give the painting more depth. For the background G.Filipe used is signature style, an Impressionist mixture of analog colors setting the stage for the main central subject.
Guilherme Filipe was born in 1897 Fajão, Portugal and died in 1971 in Lisbon. With only 21 years (1918) he had his debut in Madrid exhibitions taking place in a group exhibition at the Palácio das Artes with the recognition of the King of Spain.
Being a revolutionary at heart in 1958 Guilherme Filipe was part of a group of intellectuals who supported General Humberto Delgado's candidacy for president of the Republic. In a society where censorship prevailed and opponents of the regime were silenced, Guilherme Filipe lived from then on as an outcast, having died three years before the establishment of democracy in Portugal.
Condition: Used/good, no damage to the painting.
