Two Bronze Cannons
- A two piece replica of antique South Asian cannons or swivel guns, cast brass structure with scroll ornaments in relief in the breech section, complete with swivel yoke or cagak, consisting of the U-shaped bracket with holes to accept the trunnions above a tapered spike. The spike fitted into holes or sockets in the bulwarks of a ship or the ramparts of a fort.
These cannons are replicas of the ones found in the Malay Archipelago, introduced by the Chinese mariners and traders who sailed in enormous junks armed with cannons and far exceeding in size contemporary vessels of the West. Passage to Southeast Asia, Africa, Southwest Asia and South Asia was made through the waters of the South China Sea and it is likely that the Chinese would have introduced the peoples of the Malay Archipelago to the instruments and techniques of gunnery at that time. Contrary to the European cannons, Malay cannons of all sizes were often highly decorated with scrollwork, floral and geometric designs, bands and rings.
Condition: Used/fair, good as decorative collectables.
Dim: 93 cm length.
