G. Filipe Painting - - An oil on board painting by renowned Portuguese artist Guilherme Filipe, 1963, on a thick wood frame topped with gold gild, signed to the corner. On this particular painting G. Filipe driverges from his usual style in two aspects, the first one being the theme, the artist used to always portray his subjects front facing, here he oddly portrays the central subject facing away from the audience with an oppressed body language, the second aspect is the grafism, G. Filipe used to paint his subjects without contours and with soft contrasts of light and shadow, on this painting the female subject is painted with thick contour lines throughout and with an unusual color palette. This odd aspects make this painting quite unique and is probably a reflection of the oppressed state in which the artist had been living since 1958 due to the dictatorship of Salazar in Portugal. Guilherme Filipe was born in 1897 Fajão, Portugal and died in 1971 in Lisbon. Being a revolutionary at heart in 1958 Guilherme Filipe was part of a group of intellectuals who supported General Humberto Delgado's candidacy for president of the Republic. In a society where censorship prevailed and opponents of the regime were silenced, Guilherme Filipe lived from then on as an outcast, having died three years before the establishment of democracy in Portugal.
