Antique Bronze - - An antique bronze Betel nut case, crescent shaped with a hinged lid, traditionally worn around the waist, with a suspension chain that would usually be mounted between the 2 integral lugs. A pair of Betel nut cutters, with ornate silver handles. Such fancy boxes were used daily by the upper classes, as Betel nuts are considered a mild stimulant, and help with stress, strain and general pain. To accompany this lot a book about Betel chewing traditions, in South East Asia. Origin : Southern Philippines Circa : Late 19th century.
