Vintage Typewriter - - A vintage Underwood Model 5 Typewriter, circa 1900-1930's, manufactured by the Underwood Typewriter Company of Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A., complete with original transport case. The Underwood Model 5 is very similar to the original Model 1, first made in 1897. The Underwood typewriter was the first widely successful modern typewriter. It pulled together the three main design elements that set the standard for the 20th century; a four-row straight keyboard, a single shift key and importantly, front striking type bars giving visible typing. Another less obvious feature, that also played a key role in the Underwood’s success, was the smooth and responsive action of its keys. Condition: Used/good, mechanism fully working (not tested with ink), has some overall faultsnto the black glazed due to age wear and need deep cleaning, but overall good.
