African Mask - - An African mask, from The Punu Ethnic Tribe, who inhabit the southern region of Gabon in Central Africa. A superb example intricately carved from a single piece of wood, and decorated in white Kaolin Clay, which is linked to ancestral spirits and purity. The almond shaped eyes, arched eyebrows and elaborate headdress are all synonymous with Punu Masks. Punu masks were traditionally used in funerary rites and ancestral ceremonies. Historically as a way to pay tribute to the deceased and ensure their peaceful transition to the spirit world. This wonderful rare mask comes from a private collection, and is well preserved for its age. Condition : Used, minimal loss to paint, overall good. Dim : 30cm (H) x16cm (W) x 10.5cm (D)
