Antique Curule Chair - - An antique Renaissance Revival Curule Chair, also referred to a Savonarola Chair. Originating in Italy and becoming increasingly popular in Europe during the 16th & 17th centuries. It exhibits the main characteristics associated with Curule Chairs, including an X Frame, with Rams head finials to the arms, the back rest boasts a pediment with carved female faces, with an additional mythical creature just below the seat which has beautiful engraved floral motifs. Traditionally chairs like these had historical significance and importance, and often used by royal figures as ceremonial seats, or in court by Judiciary Authority. This chair has had a hard life and requires a little TLC to bring it back to its former grand stature. Circa : Late 19th Century. Condition : Used, with small faults, little loss to the wood in places, structurally good, overall fair/good. Dim : 91cm (H) x 59cm (W)
