Antonio Martínez Penella (1917-2008) - Antonio Martínez Penella (1917-2008) Studio for female nude. Antonio Martínez Penella (Masanasa, Valencia 1917 - Bayona, Pontevedra 2008) was a sculptor and draughtsman who worked for public and religious buildings during the Franco regime. He began his training at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios Artísticos in Valencia before the end of the Spanish Civil War and continued his education under the guidance of the sculptors Carmelo Vicent and Capuz. He won the Spanish National Sculpture Prize in 1944 and in 1950 was awarded a scholarship by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In the 1960s he took up teaching drawing and was admitted to the Faculty of Fine Arts at the UCM in Madrid. He retired to Bayonne, where he died.
