Jacob Petit (Paris 1796–1868) – Pair of Vases - Pair of decorated porcelain vases, signed by the renowned French ceramist Jacob Mordecai, of Jewish origin, who adopted his wife's surname to become known as Jacob Petit. Born and died in Paris, his extensive high-quality ceramic production encompassed virtually all French and German techniques, tastes and models of the 18th and 19th centuries, where he particularly excelled in his delicate polychromies. Self-taught as a draughtsman, he perfected his technique under the tutelage of the renowned neoclassical master painter Antoine-Jean Gros (Paris 1771 - Meudon 1835), who worked directly for Napoleon Bonaparte. Both porcelain pieces are signed on their respective bases with the initials ‘J P’. In good overall condition, with minor imperfections that do not affect the beauty of the set (some original anatomical, floral and plant fragments have been incorporated). Measurements: 34 x 21 cm each vase (approximately).
