Johann Baptist Stahl (1869-1932) Ulysses, c. 1900 - Ceramic decorative plate made by Johann Baptist Stahl (June 1869, in Oberbetschdorf, Alsace 1869 - Mettlach 1932). Active between 1895 and 1920, the invention of his fanolite technique created high quality in his creations designed for the prestigious house Villeroy & Bosch. The subject represented here is a moment in Ulysses' journeys narrated in the classical Greek poem The Odyssey by Homer (8th century BC). It could be the journey of Ulysses and his men to the island of Aeolus. There, the king of the winds lived, and they were exceptionally treated for a month. Before continuing their sea journey, the crew received a gift, a container that held the most powerful winds, except for Zephyr, the wind necessary to return to their destination Ithaca. Signed by J.
