Jopie Huisman (1922-2000) - 'three brothers' - Painting, oil on canvas. Title 'the three brothers'. Signed bottom right Jopie Huisman (Workum 1922 - Groningen 2000), dated 1965. Literature: 'Jopie Huisman - Zoals het daar lag', R. Kopland, page 144 (as 'The three brothers'). The painting is also visible in Huisman's living room during the report about his painting in Gewest tot Gewest in 1968. Jopie talks about the painting 'These are three friends of mine from Workum (..) These three people have somewhat changed, so that no one can recognize them by appearance. I met them one night when they were sleeping off the drunkenness (...). I tried to depict the tragedy that lies behind drunkenness here. I have gone so far in my life that I once got drunk myself. By the way, that old Solomon did the same, he indulged his flesh in drink, to find that man in a drunken state was superior to sober. My experience is that you can be happier sober than you can feel happy drunk. And I have tried to capture that whole situation here.
