ENORMOUS FLAG GROUPING PRESENTED TO DEPARTING JAPANESE SOLDIER
A truly extraordinary collection of 24 flags and 3 sashes, housed in the original 21.5" x 12.25" x 3.75" white box, commemorating the Jan. 10, 1938 deployment of a Japanese soldier "Mr. Hayashi". Included within this lot is: three large silk banners; eight medium-sized silk banners; ten small silk banners; three cotton sashes; and three signed cotton flags. The top of the lid bears the inscription in Japanese kanji: "Showa 13 (1938) 10th Jan. Deployment Flags for Mr. Hayashi". This rare grouping also includes an original group photograph, 10.75 x 8.5 in., showing Hayashi surrounded by a crowd of his family, friends, and neighbors - many of whom hold aloft the various banners and flags shown throughout this lot. Photograph shows notable creasing, with some marginal tears repaired on the verso. Generally very good to fine condition. The first such complete grouping we have encountered.
