CHARLES, GRAND DUKE OF BADEN
(1786 - 1818) Grand Duchy of Baden from 1811 to 1818, best known for being forced into marrying Napoleon Bonaparte's adopted daughter, Stephanie de Beauharnais. Great association A.L.S. 'Charles', 1p. 7 x 12 in., Carlsrouche, Oct. 12, 1817, addressed to FERDINAND I (1751 - 1825) as the King of the Two Sicilies, proudly announcing the birth of his daughter. Folds, light spot of foxing, else fine. Sold with transmittal envelope. MARIE AMELIE OF BADEN (1817-1888), referenced in the letter, was the youngest daughter of Charles, Grand Duke of Baden and Stephanie de Beauharnais. In 1843, she married the Scottish nobleman William Hamilton, later becoming Duke and Duchess of Hamilton. As the step-granddaughter of Napoleon himself, Ferdinand may not have been so celebratory about Amelie's birth, since Napoleon's European conquests caused Ferdinand to be deposed from the throne of Naples for over 11 years.
