EDWARD VIII
(1894-1972) King of England whose abdication of the throne in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson rocked Great Britain and led to his spending the balance of his life in self-imposed exile. Remarkable signed transcript of his first radio broadcast after his abdication, 1p. 8.5 x 13 in., certainly prepared at a later date for Edward's signature. First delivered on Dec. 10, 1936, his statement notably reads, in part: 'At long last I am able to say a few words of my own...a few hours ago, I discharged my last duty as King...you all know the reasons which have impelled me to renounce the throne...I did not forget the Country or the Empire...But you must believe me when I tell you that I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love...the decision I have made has been mine, and mine alone...I now quit altogether public affairs...we all have a new King...I wish Him and you, His people, happiness and prosperity with all my heart...' Signed 'Edward Duke of Windsor' at the conclusion, adding the date: 'March 23, 1967'. Unevenly toned from previous framing, two negligible chips to bottom corners, else fine.
