JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
(1789 - 1851) American novelist. When challenged by his wife to write, he created the classics 'The Last of the Mohicans' and 'The Deerslayer'. A.L.S. 'J. Fenimore Cooper', 1p. 7.75 x 7.5 in., May 30, 1841 to Archibald Campbell, Acting Secretary of State of New York. In part: '...This morning early, I returned your visit and was disappointed at finding you had gone. I went with the hope of persuading you to breakfast with me, and of attending one little church; but will understand your impatience to get home...The object of this letter is to acknowledge the civility of your visit...Another time, I hope to be more fortunate, and should I ever find myself in your part of the country...I shall not allow a fine mile to prevent me from saying as much in person.' Evenly toned, a small interior tear repaired with archival tape on verso.
