A Rare and Impressive Carved Wood Silver Gold and Leather Tobacco Set, Japan, Meiji Period (1868–1912) - Comprising a tobacco pouch of leather decorated with red stripes, fitted with a clasp decorated with an obidome depicting the god Hotei beside a child and, on its inner side, engraved (kebori) with a fan symbolising the presence of the god Fukurokuju, and a walking stick alluding to his brother Jurojin. The pouch is attached to a bluish cord strung with three ojime beads, the central bead in shibuichi alloy with a woven pattern. Terminating in a matching wooden cover and pipe (kiseruzutsu). The pipe cover is carved wood (probably ichi), inlaid in silver and gold with a bird beside a lotus flower in takamaki-e. The pipe itself is carved wood with a geometric design, the ends in silver and shibuichi decorated with flowing water, foliage, dragonflies, and ducks in silver and gold in takazogan.
