Torat ha‑Mashiah: Evangelium secundum Matthaeum in lingua Hebraica, Sebastian Munster, Basel, 1537 - First edition of Münster’s Hebrew-language version of the Gospel of Matthew, with Latin translation and brief annotations. Title page in Hebrew (“תורה המשיח”) with decorative wood-cut border. with his Latin translation, preceded by an opening essay, De fide Christianorum et Judaeorum (On the Faith of the Christians and the Jews). With dedicatory to epistle to king Henry VIII. Contains the Hebrew text in right-hand column and Latin version in facing column; includes printer’s device on last page. Printed in Basel by Henricus Petrus (Henric Petri) in 1537. Notes: Munster was a pioneer of Christian Hebraism, professor of Hebrew in Basel, and edited this Hebrew gospel edition in 1537. This edition has long been studied in the context of Hebrew versions of the New Testament; seen as one of the earliest printed Hebrew Gospels.
