Lesser Ury (1861-1931), By the Riverbank - Oil on canvas 1889 Signed and dated (lower left). 43 x 50 cm Provenance: Purchased by Hersch Pepper in Germany between 1914-1918. By descent to Izidor Fritz Pepper. By descent to the mother of the present owner. Notes: This work has remained in the owner’s family since the early 20th century. It was purchased from the military salary of the owner’s great-grandfather, Hirsch Pepper, while serving as an officer in the German army during the First World War. Preserved in its original frame, the work hung in the family’s Berlin drawing room for many years. When the Pepper family fled to Israel, they were able to bring the work with them. It has since hung proudly in the family home, on a wall painted forest green especially for it, lending its frame a fitting sense of grandeur. The absence of condition notes does not imply good condition.
