Anne Ratkowski (1903-1996), Jewish Quarter at Night - Oil on canvas Signed in initials (lower left). 91 x 120 cm Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist's parents in Argentina during the 1950's. By descent to the mother of the present owner (Swarsenky family which immigrated to Argentina from Poland during WWII). Notes: Anneliese (“Anne”) Ratkowski was a Berlin born German-Jewish artist whose work was championed from the 1920s by her teacher, Arthur Segal. Barred from public artistic life after the Nazi rise to power, she nevertheless continued to work and escaped to Belgium in 1937. She survived the German occupation, resumed exhibiting in Brussels after the war, and emigrated to New York in 1948 after Belgium denied her permanent residency. Though largely forgotten in Germany for decades, her work has recently begun to receive renewed attention. Some paint loss in the lower right ar ea.
