Bidspirit auction | Avigdor Stematzky (1908-1989), Abstract

Avigdor Stematzky (1908-1989), Abstract - Oil on canvas ca 1968 Signed (lower right). 82 x 65 cm Provenance: Private collection, Tel Aviv. Notes: Stematsky stayed in France between 1961 and 1962. He returned with a growing confidence in the language of abstraction, following the influence of the French artist Jean Fautrier. The realistic traces that had still been present in his earlier work disappeared, becoming absorbed beneath heavy layers of impasto. Three paintings whose texture resembles that of the present work (no. 53, 54 and 55 in the catalogue) appeared in Stematsky’s 1993 retrospective at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. All were executed in 1968. Yona Fischer wrote in the exhibition catalogue: “The emergence of a linear element within the material and painterly facture, or hovering above it, is especially evident in 1968—a prolific year of highly abstract, expressive yet introspective paintings…” (p. 85). Literature: Fischer, Yona, ed., with Irit Hadar. Avigdor Stematsky. Tel Aviv: Stematsky Publishers and Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 1993. 187 pp. 85.
