Jacob Wexler (1912–1995), The Circus - Acrylic on canvas ca 1950's Signed lower right. 58 x 45 cm Provenance: Estate of Nurit and Ami Osnat. Notes: Wexler, a graduate of the School of Art in Hamburg, immigrated to Palestine in 1935. In his youth, he was exposed to the influences of German Expressionism; however, his Expressionist paintings of the 1940s were primarily influenced in their texture, colour palette, and choice of subject matter by the French artist Georges Rouault, . In 1955, he travelled to France, where he participated in the Salon d’Automne. Although his work was generally influenced by the French Art Informel painters, Chagall was his principal influence, as is particularly evident in his circus scenes. The present painting was most likely executed in Paris, before his return to Israel. Condition: For a condition report, please contact office@alma.auction.
