A fine and rare silver and gilded silver wire embroidered ”Meil” -Torah mantle. - Ottoman Turkey 18th/19th century - The Torah mantle is formed from a early Ottoman dress that has been re-purposed  ( as was custom in Ottoman Turkey) to be a Torah mantle. Fine silver wire, floral and basket motif  embroidery on purple velvet. The upper part of the mantle has a woven gilded silver ribbon element sewn. The same element appears  on the back of the mantle. Beads strung in some of the floral elements.  some wear to the velvet. signs of age- Overall condition is good.  dimensions: 79* 36 cm * It was common practice in Turkey and the Ottoman Provinces to donate to the Synagogue dresses and other household textiles, in honor of a wedding or birth. A textile like this would have been owned by a very wealthy Jewish woman and an honorable gift to be given.
