Antique c1890 Irish Chain with Swag Border - Antique c1890 Irish Chain with Swag Border measuring 80 by 81 inches, from Smithville, Wayne County, Ohio. Previously from the Dr. Virginia Gunn collection. Single Irish chain 12 inch blocks formed with white dotted indigo in 1.5 inch squares and alternating with 12 inch white squares. The design is framed by a border of 2.5 blue and white half square triangles and a 9 inch border of blue and white swags on white, each border strip with its own length of swags that do not meet in the corners. Entirely hand pieced, appliquéd, and join by hand including the back seams. The 9 patch pattern blocks are quilted in half inch diagonal lines throughout, the white setting squares are quilted in one inch diagonal squares with double lines in the border strips are quilted in half inch diagonal lines through the appliqué. Found in Inc. indigo on 2 sides and the white backing fabric narrowly turned to the front to form binding in the other 2 edges. Some weakness and small holes in the indigo dotted fabric, and small discolorations.
