Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de - PARTE PRIMERA Y SEGUNDA DEL INGENIOSO HIDALGO DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA. Madrid. Imprenta Real / Mateo Fernandez. 1668. (6) 353 (3) fls. 20 cm x 15 cm. Bd. - Extremely rare seventeenth-century joint edition of both parts of Cervantes’ Don Quixote, a masterpiece of human genius and imagination. Printed in Madrid at the Imprenta Real at the order and expense of Mateo de la Bastida, one of the most important booksellers of Madrid’s Siglo de Oro, this edition follows exactly that of 1662. It thus belongs to the phase in which the Quixote text was being stabilised, showing certain editorial variations from the original editions of 1605 and 1615. The text is printed in two columns. The present edition, which ANNO has the privilege of offering at auction, is renowned for the printing error in the Second Part: according to Rius, the printer forgot to alter the year in the original typesetting, resulting in the book being issued with the date 1662. Good overall condition. Contemporary vellum binding. Small paper losses to the lower right corner of leaves 30, 58, and 87; small tear to leaf 113; and a minor paper flaw within the text area of leaf 215, not affecting legibility. Leaf 198 shows loss of text in the lower right corner due to a printing error (see photo). Complete copy. Bardon, 2016, p. 36. Palau 51995. Rius, 22.
