Creator of a national imaginary at once popular and erudite, he elevated caricature to the status of both art and moral chronicle of his age, fixing in characters such as Zé Povinho the collective dramaturgy of a country poised between liberal hope and fin-de-siècle disenchantment. In parallel, through the ceramics of Caldas, he reinvented tradition by means of an exuberant naturalism and an ironic figurative language, demonstrating that the applied arts could be as intellectually ambitious as grand painting.
