SÃO BERNARDO. ( Frei Manuel de) MANUSCRITO – Century XVIII – TOTIUS PHILOSOPHIA CURSUS - Manuscript written by one hand, containing the texts of the philosophy course taught by Friar Manuel de S. Bernardo at the Convent of S. Francisco da Guarda, according to the doctrinal plan of John Duns Scotus—the Doctor Subtilis, whose philosophy structured the study program in Franciscan convents for centuries. The dedication, written on November 7, 1736, is made ”ad mentem subtilissimi Magistri Mariani, ” to Duns Scotus, whom the Order never abandoned. Along with the manuscript are six printed sheets of the Tese Conclusiones Logicales de Proaemialibus Dialecticae, defended at the same Convent by the students who completed the course, bound between pages 650 and 651. Printed in Coimbra at the College of the Company of Jesus, year 1737, with a dedication to Our Lady of Necessities. Friar Manuel de S. Bernardo (Barcelos, January 9, 1708 – ?) entered the Order on March 5, 1726. He taught philosophy in Guarda and later held the Chair of Vespers of Theology in Mafra. Barbosa Machado, in his Bibliotheca Lusitana, does not mention this manuscript — which makes this copy all the more significant for the history of Franciscan philosophy in Portugal. A set of great rarity and outstanding value for the history of philosophical teaching in Franciscan convent schools. Contemporary full leather binding, worn, with damaged dust jackets and corners. The text is framed by a border of small typographic vignettes; there are page breaks. On page 355, on a thicker sheet of paper glued in place, there is a tree of beings and qualities drawn in color. Calligraphic decorations in ink throughout the interior.
