VALENÇA. (Francisco) VARÕES ASSINALADOS - ANNO 1909-1911 - Complete album of 48 colour caricatures published monthly by Francisco Valença from the first issue of year 1, no. 1, of September 1909, through to year 2, no. 48, of August 1911 — that is, from one month before the fall of the Monarchy through to the early years of the Republic. Each portrait is accompanied by a humorous biography written by authors such as André Brun, Gomes Leal, Carlos Simões, Alfredo Mesquita, Albino Forjaz de Sampaio, and Mayer Garção, amongst others. Those portrayed include Manuel de Arriaga, Miguel Bombarda, Guerra Junqueiro, Afonso Costa, José Relvas, Teófilo Braga, and many others — figures from political, cultural, and social life who shaped the transition to the republican regime. Francisco de Paula Valença (Lisbon, 1882–1962) was the most important Portuguese caricaturist of his era, regarded as the natural successor to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. Founder of several humorous publications — O Chinelo, Salão Cómico, O Moscardo — his work received international recognition, with Varões Assinalados awarded the Grand Prix at the Rio de Janeiro Exhibition of 1922–1923.
