Founded on a detailed analysis of manuscript and iconographic documents, the work traces a comprehensive panorama of furniture in Portugal from prehistory to around the seventeenth century, cataloguing both known and previously unrecorded pieces and placing them within a broad chronological perspective. The four volumes are divided as follows: Volume I, from the Earliest Times to the Gothic; Volume II, the Sixteenth Century; Volume III, India and Japan; Volume IV, Appendices. Particular prominence is given to pieces of Luso-Asian origin, which the author studies with exemplary thoroughness in the third volume. Bernardo Ferrão de Tavares e Távora (Guimarães, 1913 – Oporto, 1982) was an art historian specialising in Portuguese decorative arts, and in this work left his essential legacy to several generations of historians and museum curators.
