Amsterdam. 1705-1720. 1 Folio. 44,0 x 102,0 cm. - Magnificent copy of the genealogical tree of the kings and queens of Portugal, from Afonso Henriques to King João V, profusely illustrated with 54 coats of arms engraved on copper plate, accompanied by extensive explanatory and descriptive texts on the royal alliances and the different branches of the lineage. The sheet was produced to form part of volume 7 (No. 22 a, b) of the celebrated Atlas Historique ou Nouvelle Introduction à l'Histoire, a monumental work in seven volumes published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720, which constituted one of the most important encyclopaedias of the eighteenth century, combining geographical maps, engravings, and information of a geographical, heraldic, ethnographic, and historical nature. The text of the Atlas was compiled by Nicholas Gueudeville and Garillon, with the engravings by Chatelain, many of them based on the maps of Guillaume De L'Isle. Henri Abraham Chatelain (Paris, 1684–1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origin, whose family fled Paris following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. He lived successively in London, The Hague, and Amsterdam, where the Atlas Historique was published as a family enterprise, with the collaboration of his father Zacharie and his brother, also named Zacharie.
