Hughes, William - PHILIPS' GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD. London. George Philip & Son. 1881. - A reference atlas of Victorian cartography, conceived by William Hughes (1817–1876), professor of geography and one of the most prolific British cartographers of the nineteenth century, in collaboration with George Philip & Son — one of London's leading cartographic publishers. The Philips' General Atlas series, launched during Hughes's lifetime, went through numerous editions throughout the second half of the 1800s, regularly updating its maps in keeping with the political transformations and geographical discoveries of the age of imperialism. This 1881 edition, published after the author's death, belongs to that tradition of rigour and comprehensiveness. Good overall condition. Minor signs of handling and occasional spots of foxing.
