Advertising Poster Winterschlacht Theatre Play WWII John Heartfield - Original vintage theatre advertising poster for Winterschlacht, a tragedy in five acts written by Johannes Robert Becher (1891-1958), a German expressionist poet and SED politician, Minister of Culture and first President of the Cultural Association of the GDR. The poster features a stark, evocative imagery by John Heartfield (1891-1968) of soldiers in warm coats and hats, armed with rifles, struggling through snow. The production was staged by the Berliner Ensemble at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in East Berlin. The play tells the story of the unknown soldier of World War Two, focusing on the defence of Moscow against Nazi forces in 1941. Copperplate engraving VEB Graphische Werkstatten, Leipzig. Horizontal.
