A Wheelock Sporting Carbine by Martin Hertel - Octagonal, slightly swamped blued barrel with six groove rifling in 15 mm calibre. Dovetailed, iron sights. The tang of the breech-screw reapired. The lock plate is decorated with a hunting scene depicting a stag hunt; the wheel lock features a concealed wheel, a spring-loaded pan cover, and a flash guard, and is marked ”MH” (Martin Hertel), iron trigger guard with finger rest, double set trigger. Carved walnut full stock with cheek piece and patchbox with spring-loaded lid, lightly decorated with horn inlays; wooden ramrod with horn ferrule. See Eugène Heer, “Der neue Stöckel,” p. 525.
