SILVER THRONE-FORM SALT CELLAR WITH NIELLO AND THE PROVERB “WITHOUT SALT AND BREAD, HALF THE MEAL” MOSCOW, 1866 - A rare silver salt cellar, executed in the form of a miniature throne, represents a striking example of Moscow artistic silver of the mid-19th century. The composition is conceived as a ceremonial seat with a high profiled back, pierced side elements, and a hinged front panel providing access to the interior compartment. This architectural treatment transforms a utilitarian object into a refined work of decorative art with pronounced symbolic character. The decorative design is based on the refined interplay of gilding and niello. The surface is richly adorned with dense ornamental patterns composed of stylized vegetal and geometric motifs characteristic of Moscow silver of the Historicist period. The niello enhances the graphic clarity of the design, creating a strong contrast with the warm tone of the gilded silver. The interior is fully gilded. The hinged lid is engraved with the proverb: “Without salt and bread, half the meal, ” reflecting the traditional symbolic importance of salt as a sign of prosperity and hospitality. The back is further embellished with a chased medallion featuring a floral motif.
