NICOLS & PLINKE. A SILVER WINE JUG WITH CUT-GLASS BODY ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY - An elegant baluster-shaped wine jug with a body of clear cut glass featuring vertical faceting. The glass body is mounted on a narrow silver foot ring. The silver handle, of gracefully curved and branched form, is harmoniously integrated into the composition and emphasizes the refined silhouette of the piece. The hinged lid is decorated with finely chased and engraved vine leaves and tendrils, symbolically associated with the wine theme. The combination of cut glass and finely worked silver reflects the high level of artistic and technical craftsmanship characteristic of leading St Petersburg workshops of the late 19th century. Marks: Latin letters “NP” maker’s mark of the firm and Purveyor to the Court of His Imperial Majesty, “NICOLS & PLINKE”; Latin letters “PK” maker’s mark of the silversmith P. Kochun / Kochuhn, who worked in the workshop of “NICOLS & PLINKE”; St Petersburg assay marks of the late 19th century; Swedish import marks. Dimensions: Height 30 cm. Condition: Good.
