HANGING OIL LAMP DESIGNED BY SERGEI VASHKOV. P.I. OLOVYANISHNIKOV & SONS RUSSIAN EMPIRE, MOSCOW, 1911 - An exquisite hanging oil lamp executed after an original design by Sergei Ivanovich Vashkov, one of the leading masters of Moscow Art Nouveau and a key reformer of ecclesiastical artistic language in the early 20th century. The composition is distinguished by its refined architectonics and a carefully balanced interplay between structural clarity and decorative expressiveness. A domed finial surmounted by a cross crowns a system of chains supporting a circular mount with a central deep-blue glass vessel. The lower section is adorned with suspended chains bearing green glass beads and a Chi-Rho cross, referencing early Christian symbolism. The lamp exemplifies Vashkov’s characteristic synthesis of Byzantine tradition, Old Russian heritage, and Art Nouveau aesthetics. Materials: Brass, blue glass, green glass beads. Minor traces of age and use consistent with the period. Structure stable; glass elements intact. Provenance: Produced by P.I. Olovyanishnikov & Sons in 1911. The first example of this model was created as a presentation piece for Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. The model is illustrated in Religious Art.
