Lapid pottery Tel Aviv water jug, gazelle designs - A true work of art and a rare find — a massive and finely crafted water jug bearing the early impressed signature of Lapid on its base. The vessel is further signed ”A.K.”, the initials of the artist who painted it, Elsabet Cohen, who studied under the ceramic artists Hedwig Grossmann and Rudy Lehmann in Jerusalem during the 1940s. Elsabet Cohen was born in Westphalia, Germany, and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1937. During the first half of the 1940s she studied pottery under Hedwig Grossmann in Jerusalem. In 1952 she was appointed chief designer of the ”Lapid” company, where her works assumed a distinctly modern character, deeply influenced by the international design movement. In a 1966 interview, Cohen asserted that there is no such thing as ”ceramics with an Israeli style, ” beyond certain folkloristic influences.
