A set of three antique volumes of Orlando Furioso, an Italian epic poem written by Ludovico Ariosto in the first half of 16th century. Orlando is the Christian knight known in French and English as Roland. The story takes place against the background of the war between Charlemagne's Christian paladins and the Saracen army that has invaded Europe and is attempting to overthrow the Christian empire. The lot consists of the first three volumes of the English translation of this poem published in London in 1799. Titled Orlando Furioso Translated from the Italian of Ludovico Ariosto with Notes by John Hoole, in Five Volumes. The books contain handwritten notes and bookplates of John Bayly, Dean of Lismore from 1828 until 1831, and an exlibris of James Andrew Means. Hardcover with golden embossing on the binding and bookends made of marbled paper. The books are supplemented with engravings. Antique Antiquarian Books For Collectors.
