19TH C GRAND TOUR BRONZE MODEL OF NAPOLEON COLUMN
An antique Victorian Grand Tour finely detailed and patinated bronze model of Vendome column. Circa: 1860s to 1890s. Mounted on a red lining. The Vendome column is the Parisian column of Victories of the Grand Army on Place Vendome in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, erected by decree of Napoleon I of January 1, 1806, in memory of the victories he won in the campaign 1805. Erected from August 25, 1806 to August 15, 1810. Designed by architects J. Gonduin and J. B. Leper. The column was installed at the request of Napoleon with a statue of the emperor and 76 sculptural reliefs by the artist David based on sketches by Bergeret. In 1833, after the July Revolution, Louis Philippe I ordered that a new statue of Napoleon be made and placed on a column. It was made by the sculptor Serr. Napoleon is presented in his famous bicorne, in a frock coat, worn over his uniform, with a telescope in his right hand.
