An antique Russian late 19th-century Icon of the Mother of God of Unexpected joy. Hand-painted in tempera on wood panel with a chased and embossed brass oklad decorated with foliage and Cyrillic inscriptions. The icon of the Mother of God of Unexpected Joy depicts a man praying on his knees in front of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. The iconographic plot for the image was the legend about the healing of a young man from carnal passion through the holy image of the Lady of Heaven.
