ANTIQUE 18TH C JAPANESE EDO PERIOD WOODBLOCK PRINT
An antique Japanese Edo period engraving in the Ukiyo e style, early edition, dates from the 18th century. The engraving consists of two parts and is turned horizontally. Depicts a traditional Japanese house with a lady writing poetry inside. Some details of the composition makes think about a portrait of Murasaki Shikibu, the author of the Genji Monogatari. But the scene here is in a hypothetical Garden in Tokushima City and the traveler comes from somewhere in Hiroshima. Murasaki Shikibu was a Japanese novelist, poet and lady-in-waiting at the Imperial court in the Heian period. Throughout the engraving there are inscriptions in Japanese, which evokes the feeling that the ladys notes have spread throughout space. Beautiful poetic engraving in the classical Ukiyo e style. Provenance: from the collection of Dr. Horacio Fabrega, Pittsburgh, PA. Ukiyo e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints. The term ukiyo e translates as picture of the floating world. Japanese Ukiyo E Woodblock Prints, Asian Artworks For Wall Decor.
