ANTIQUE JAPANESE KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI MANGA PRINT
Katsushika Hokusai, Japanese, 1760 to 1849, an original woodblock print showing part of Hokusai Manga, a collection of sketches that includes depictions of landscapes, flora and fauna, everyday life, and supernatural elements. The print focuses on various figures, possibly religious. Created between 1814 and 1819, the Hokusai Manga sheets feature illustrations in three colors: black sumi, light black sumi, and light vermilion, and text. The term manga in this context does not refer to the contemporary storytelling manga but denotes informal drawings or preparatory sketches for paintings during the Edo period.
